DELIVERING CONCRETE ACTIONS FOR SDG 7 “AFFORDABLE AND CLEAN ENERGY” IN DISPLACEMENT CONTEXTS

In March 2023, Epa conducted fieldwork in Nakivale Refugee Settlement in Uganda, shedding light on the challenges of energy access. Due to population growth and widespread deforestation, refugees and host communities face significant hurdles in accessing fuels to cook. While innovative solutions like biogas cooking systems offer some hope, the overall situation remains dire. More work is needed to support sustainable energy access for refugees and host communities. Epa explains how crucial innovations in cooking systems are in order to implement SDG 7 for “Affordable and clean energy” in displacement contexts.

The achievement of SDGs requires a comprehensive approach, and the COVID-19 pandemic has emphasized the interconnectedness of various policy areas. UNESCO has defined eight core cross-cutting SDG competencies, and UNITAR, in partnership with UNESCO, has developed the "SDG Fitness Test" online self-assessment tool to measure the development of these competencies.

INDEPENDENT MID-TERM EVALUATION OF THE "BUILDING CAPACITY FOR THE 2030 AGENDA 2.0" PROJECT

The "Building Capacity of the 2030 Agenda 2.0" project has a transformative goal of enhancing the capacities of countries, institutions, and individuals to effectively integrate key SDG principles into their daily analysis and practices.

The project focuses on fostering integrated national planning, robust monitoring systems, and the development of cross-cutting sustainability competencies for individuals. By providing customized support, including advisory services, training activities, and access to free e-learning services, the project aims to equip stakeholders with the necessary tools and knowledge to design, implement, and review policies, strategies, and actions that are coherent and highly effective, considering the interconnectedness of all SDGs. Additionally, the project places emphasis on promoting the Leave No One Behind (LNOB) agenda and addressing the needs of the most vulnerable population groups while ensuring environmental sustainability. An independent evaluation has assessed the project's intermediate results, and it will continue its implementation until 2026. The project seeks to contribute to the transformation of capacities and promote a comprehensive approach to achieving the SDGs.

THE CIFAL GLOBAL NETWORK
WELCOMES CIFAL TBILISI

In partnership with Europe Foundation (Georgia), UNITAR has established its 32nd CIFAL centre in Georgia, which will offer a range of learning opportunities on artificial intelligence, social inclusion, and effective governance to facilitate knowledge-sharing between government officials, leaders, and civil society members from the Caucasus region.

UNITAR AND NTU SINGAPORE RESEARCH JOINTLY LAUNCH CIFAL CENTRE TO FOCUS ON SUSTAINABILITY EDUCATION

In partnership with Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU Singapore) UNITAR has established its 31st CIFAL centre in Singapore to offer a range of learning opportunities on sustainability education and facilitate knowledge sharing between government officials and leaders from different Asia Pacific countries.
